United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration honors local Vets
SHERBURNE – On Tuesday, June 20 members of the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration and veterans from the Vietnam Veterans of America Post 944 of the Utica Chapter, joined in a celebration dinner and pinning ceremony to honor those who have fought in the Vietnam War from Chenango County.
During the pinning ceremony, Thomas Buono, President of the Utica Chapter wished to thank “...the sons of the Auxiliary and the Auxiliary for the fantastic meal. Our purpose is to promote and support the full range of issues that are important to Vietnam veterans, to create a new identity for this generation of veterans, and to change public perception of Vietnam veterans.
“VVA strives to aggressively advocate on issues important to veterans, seek full access to quality health care for veterans, identify the full range of disabling injuries and illnesses incurred during military service, create a positive public perception of Vietnam veterans, seek the fullest possible accounting of America’s POWs and MIAs, and support the next generation of America’s war veterans and serve our communities,” said Buono.
Candy Curry, Service Coordinator of United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration, also spoke during the ceremony on behalf of the commemoration and displayed the pin that each veteran would receive. The pin is awarded to those who have served at any time on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, regardless of location during the time of November 1, 1955 to may 15, 1975. “Since August we have pinned over 500 vets and this today is our 17 pinning ceremony”, said Curry. In her final speech she quoted President Obama commemoration speech on the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War.
“One of our most painful chapters in our history was Vietnam, most particularly for how we treated our troops, who served there,” said Obama. “You were often blamed for a war you didn’t start, when you should have been commended for serving your country with valor. You were sometimes blamed for misdeeds of a few, when the honorable service of the many should have been praised. You came home and sometimes were denigrated, when you should have been celebrated. You did your job, you served your country and you did it with honor,” quoted Curry.
“I would just like to say thank you on behalf of a grateful nation, we thank you,” said Curry.
