Oxford PONY League drops third straight game
CHERRY VALLEY – The young Oxford PONY League team traveled to to play Cherry Valley-Springfield this past Monday, in a game which proved to go south quickly as Oxford fell 15-1 on the road.
This non-league road loss, showed just how dominant Cherry Valley-Springfield cane be – smashing 12 hits for 15 runs and no errors in a five-inning game.
Taking the loss for Oxford, on the mound, was Nolan Dodweitz. Dodweitz pitched 74 pitches in just two innings – for three strikeouts, three walks, while allowing six hits for eight runs, three of which were earned.
Issac Bennett was called in for Oxford for what proved to be the final two innings – pitching 50 pitches for three walks, no strikeouts, and allowing six hits for seven runs, one of which was earned.
The Oxford defense did little to help their pitchers, committing five errors which allowed 11 unearned runs to score in the four innings which Cherry Valley-Springfield was up to bat.
Oxford found themselves in a 3-0 hole after the first inning – a hole which could have easily been climbed out of.
Levi Bennett would score Oxford’s lone run in the game during the second inning – as Bennett sped home on a passed ball. Down just 3-1, Oxford was still alive – that is until Cherry Valley-Springfield ripped into the soft Oxford defense.
Cherry Valley-Springfield sent five runs home in the bottom of the second inning for an 8-1 lead – only to add seven additional runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Oxford would be blanked the remainder of the game, leading to the 15-1 destruction on the road.
Best at the plate for Oxford, was Nick Cirello, Keegan Franklin, Brad Beckwith, Sean Smith, and Issac Bennett – each of which would finish 1-2 in the game.
Next up for Oxford PONY League (0-3 overall), they will travel to Greene on Thursday, June 29, to play a league game against Greene PONY League, at 6 p.m.
