Lady Bobcats excel, sending three to compete in Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Three Bainbridge-Guilford student-athletes are prepping their bags to head to Florida, during the week of July, 10.
These three girls – Abigail Selfridge and Zamira Caldwell of the class of 2019, and Erica Selfridge of the class of 2021 – have made the regional team that will compete in the IREVA High Performance volleyball tournament.
“The IREVA High Performance (HP) program selects, develops and support junior level female athletes who have the desire to become the best volleyball players at the highest level of which they are capable. The program is highly competitive and provides athletes with an opportunity to train and compete with some of the region’s best athletes and coaches,” reads an except from the Iroquois-Empire Volleyball Association website.
Bainbridge-Guilford head volleyball coach, Tami Selfridge, will be making the trip to Florida as a spectator and mother – rather than a coach, this time around.
“The IREVA program, they really just have awesome coaches. The coaches do such a great job, a lot of the coaches have come up through the program and they just love the game and love to tech kids the game. It is great for us (B-G) coming from a little school, because the girls don’t get that kind of exposure,” said coach Selfridge. “It is so incredible, they’ll play teams from Texas and Florida and California. I will be traveling as a parent only, which is good. It is great for them because they all need other coaches input.”
Abigail, Zamira, and Erica will be playing on the regional New York team and will face off against other regional teams from around the United States and throughout the world.
“It is a huge tournament, you walk into the Greater Fort Lauderdale Broward County Convention Center and there are 25 or so courts set up in this one room. There are nets set up all over and whistles are going off all over, the minimum height for any of these girls is about 5’9” 5’10”,” said coach Selfridge.
Abigail will remarkably be making her third trip to the USA Volleyball High Performance Championship – having gone in 2016 to Fort Lauderdale and in 2015 to Iowa. Zamira and Erica will be competing in their first ever championship at this caliber – having gone to training camps in prior year’s but never having qualified.
“In order to be selected, the girls needed to attend tryouts where they competed against girls throughout the region regardless of school size or location,” said coach Selfridge in a statement.
A fourth Bainbridge-Guilford volleyball player has qualified in 2017 to participate in the training program for the IREVA program – Marissa Cuozzo.
“Marrisa has played junior varsity in the past and she will be an 11th grader this year, so she’ll be on the varsity. She made the training camp as a Libero – which is the defensive specialist. For her that is a really great thing, the biggest thing I (B-G volleyball) lost was my two defensive specialists,” said coach Selfridge. “Marissa goes the first week of July, then the three of them go the week of the 10th, then once they do that, they come home they repack their bags and fly down to Fort Lauderdale.”
As one might expect, the cost associated with a travel experience is quite large. The cost for each girl to attend the camp and travel with their assigned team will be approx $1,800. The girls will be holding fundraisers now through July in an attempt to raise money to pay for this experience.
“We hope that their friends and neighbors, teammates and the community at large will rally to support them in these fundraisers,” said coach Selfridge. “It is a huge opportunity for our area in general. There aren’t many kids who travel from our area and again it is something that they have earned. They all love the sport of volleyball, they had to tryout and in order to make the travel team, they had to go on a weekend mini-camp in the spring to secure their spot on the team.”
