22 years of dedication and still going strong
NORWICH – Pictured above is Steve Benenati, a familiar face to all who attend Gus Macker in Norwich, each and every year. Steve has been with the Macker program for the entirety, stretching 22 years. Last year, saw Steve step down as the head referee for Gus Macker – although he still has chosen to stay involved.
“I am looking forward to this year. Every year, I have been working every year. I love basketball, I enjoy the community and somebody has got to do it. I no longer have any kids playing in Macker (Lauren 32, Ryan 30 and Katie 25). That is one of the enjoyable things, seeing your kids start on court A and work their way down the street,” said Benenati.
Susan Ross has taken over as the head Gusbuster, 2017 will mark the first year Susan will be running the show.
“I am a firm believer that if you surround yourself with good people, then everything will go well, and I have great people that have been around forever,” said Gus Macker Director Tom Revoir. “I have run the tournament for 21 out of the 22 years, I took over the second year. Steve (Benenati) has been with the tournament and a part of the ref search for all 22 years.”
Revoir mentioned that the referees will be wearing pink Chobani shirts on Saturday, July 8, and green Chobani shirts on Sunday, July 9 – swapping colors with the scorekeepers from Saturday to Sunday.
“Macker is a great event, if I can tell everyone one thing is to remember that everyone who is out there, it is all volunteers that make this possible,” said Revoir. “Thank god for Steve, it is people like him that keep this going.”
Revoir also noted that this year NYCM Insurance – another major sponsor, to go along with Chobani – is bringing back the Trifecta tournament.
This tournament is free to the public, asking only for a donation, and is open all day on Saturday. With a $500 prize for the winner – anyone interested will be asked to make a layup, a foul shot, and three point shot in order to qualify to have your name drawn for the finals where the people will compete for the $500 prize.
All the proceeds NYCM raises for the day will go toward the Savannah Williams Scholarship fund.
“It is a great event, most towns don’t have events like this,” said Revoir. “We seem to have pinnacle events.”
Make sure to thank a volunteer at Gus Macker when they have a chance for a break away from working this weekend.
