200 volunteers are gearing up for the annual Gus Macker 3 on 3 tournament
NORWICH – Gus Macker, Norwich’s annual weekend of family fun street basketball, is fast approaching and volunteers are gearing up to make this upcoming weekend a total success.
For the past 22 years, the volunteer count has been slowly rising with all walks of life. However, Tom Revoir of The YMCA, stresses the importance of encouraging the younger population “new blood” to take part in this Norwich tradition.
This year’s Gus Macker volunteers consist of roughly 200 with 70 being referees “Gus busters”, 40-50 are handling registration, 40 scorekeepers and others include water runners and grounds/ garbage.
“With an event this size and magnitude, it would be impossible to do without the help of our volunteers. While every volunteer is very important to us, I Would have to say that the refs are the single most important mainly because without their devotion the love of Macker would not last,” said Revoir.
“While I do not like to single anyone out because in my opinion everyone is equally important, NBT Bank and NYCM has about 40 representing sponsors who will lend a hand on friday night to help set up courts, bleachers and anything else needed for the event”, said Revoir.
Each volunteer will be equipped with a golf cart to ride around the Gus Macker zone as well as a radio for communication.
As 2016 marks a contract year of the current two year contract for Gus Macker with The City of Norwich, this year is extremely important in proving the weekend event is as successful as it has been in past years.
