SCHENEVUS – Faced with a doubleheader on Sunday, July 9, the Sherburne squad lit up the scoresheet with a 12-2 win in game over Schenevus – before an 8-1 win over Milford.
Sherburne and Schenevus battled in the close game – to begin with – each bringing in a run in the first inning.
Sherburne would take the lead in Otsenango PONY League Division C game, when the team managed to earn the run in the second inning. With a 2-1 lead, it was Schenevus who battled back for the momentary tie, scoring a run in the top of the third inning.
With the game knotted at 2-2, Sherburne exploded for a massive inning of eight runs to destroy the tie and take the lead in one final swoop. Nearly the entire batting order scored in the inning, as Sherburne marched to the 12-2 stomping of Schenevus at home.
Subsequently, the Marauders added a run in the fifth and sixth inning to close out the win.

SHERBURNE – A short break on the day of baseball, Sunday, July 9, and Sherburne’s PONY League squad went right back to work – this time taking the 8-1 win over Milford.
With a shortened game, Sherburne waisted no time getting right to work – knocking home a run to score Preston Eaves right out of the gates.
Two hits, that is all Sherburne could muster – but that is all that was needed to secure the win, as Milford managed just one hit and was nearly blanked, save a late security run.
Following a stalemated second inning, Sherburne exploded again – proving to be a very opportunistic team when it comes to scoring.
One hit and five runs later, Sherburne found themselves up big over Milford – leading 6-0.
Ron Demello, Troy Fleming, Preston Eaves, Noah Posson, and Mason Goedel each scored a run in the inning – with Eaves recording the lone hit for a single.
Sherburne added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning taking the lead to 8-1 – following Milford’s lone run on the night, coming in the top of the fourth.

SCHENEVUS – Back over to Schenevus the Sherburne PONY League team ventured – with their season potentially riding on the line.
The crafty and resilient Sherburne squad punched their ticket to the playoffs, and with it took the Otsenango PONY League Division C Championship with them – downing Schenevus for a second time in two days by a score of 11-6.
“Monday’s game with Schenevus will determine Division champs,” said Sherburne PONY League coach Jim McDaniel.
Nine innings long, and with all the heroics and theatrics that one could ask for – Sherburne went the distance to pull off a big win in their final regular season game.
“It was such a great game,” said Sherburne PONY League head coach Brian Hicks. “It was so dark (when the game finished), it was amazing.”
According to coach Hicks, it was Gabe Irwin who began the push for the championship game, striking out 13 batters in his six innings pitched. Sherburne combined for three strikeouts in the final three innings.
Sherburne jumped to a solid 2-0 lead in the fourth inning – as both teams battled in the early innings to secure a hit, let alone a run. Back-to-back innings in the fourth and fifth had Sherburne rolling toward their championship with 4-0 lead.
That is when Schenevus attacked back, snagging two runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the game to 4-2. Schenevus added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the game even closer at 4-3.
Sherburne answered with their fifth run of the night, as Irwin smashed a single to score Noah Posson.
“It was 5-3 in the seventh inning, they had a guy on second and third with two strikes,” said coach Hicks. “Their guy hits the ball hit and ties it.”
Overtime proved to be the same as before – lots of back-and-forth action, as the two divisional teams battled for the top seed.
Sherburne almost saw their chances slip away when some missed opportunities in the eighth inning – scored once by Bret Bates – however, left three runners on base.
“Bottom of the eighth, we walk one then he steals second,” said coach Hicks walking through the defining moments. “Strike two out, then they had a leftie come up, first at bat and he pokes one right over our heads.”
The game is tied, once again.
Then something clicked. Sherburne had had enough of the back-and-forth. Or better yet, Schenevus ran out of power trying to keep pace with the Marauders, who just wouldn’t quit.
The ninth inning saw Sherburne score five runs, ensuring they walked away the division champions.
Preston Eaves saw his moment and he shined. With bases loaded, Eaves smacked a triple to score Bates, Menard and Irwin – starting the momentum that Sherburne needed to put the game away.
“It was really fun, it was a real good game,” said coach Hicks.
Bret Bates, Ben Menard, Gabe Irwin, Nate Morgan, and Troy Fleming each scored in the ninth inning – as Sherburne walked away the victors with 11 runs on five hits.
Next up for Sherburne PONY League (7-1-1 overall), they will be hosting the second-place Division D team in Delhi (6-3 overall). The first round of the Otsenango PONY League playoffs will begin Thursday, July 13. All games will have a start time of 5:30 p.m.
