CHENANGO COUNTY – Heading into its third decade of raising funds in the community to fight cancer, the 21st annual Relay for Life of Chenango County is set to take place tomorrow, July 14 –– for the first time ever in the City of Norwich's East Park –– from 2 p.m. to midnight, as participants strive to reach this year's goal of raising $120,000.
"Our theme is 'Back to Basics,' back to the original purpose of what Dr. Gordy Klatt first started in May of 1985, when he spent 24-hours walking or running a track in Tacoma, WA, raising money for the American Cancer Society," said Relay for Life of Chenango County Event Chair Kristina Shaw. "We won't be doing a 24-hour event, but the hours spent in East Park will show our friends, family and community members that may be fighting cancer––they are not in this fight alone."
Although officially commencing with the Opening Ceremony at 6:15 p.m., the event will be open-to-the-public in East Park beginning at 2 p.m.
The event's annual Survivor’s Dinner – formerly held at the Exhibition Hall of the Chenango County Fairgrounds – will be held in the Norwich Fire Department from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. It's reported that dinner will be catered by New York Pizzeria, and desserts provided by Cottage Bakery.
It's reported that the Survivor Ceremony/First Lap will follow the Opening Ceremony at 6:30 p.m. in East Park before a live performance by Norwich City Band serenades Relay for Life-goers from the park's stage from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m..
"Our survivors and caregivers will kick-off the event with the first laps walked by them: another chance for us to recognize them," said Shaw.
Meanwhile, Teaser's Salon will facilitate 'Pantene Beautiful Lengths: Hair Donations & Cuts' from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the base of the stage.
Relay for Life of Chenango County's annual Luminaria Ceremony – part of the event's mission to sell 2,000 luminarias in memory of those deceased due to cancer or in honor of those who have been affected – will start at 9:30 p.m. Bagpiper Steven Cady will perform during the Luminaria Ceremony.
The Luminaries will be released during the Memorial Sky Lantern Launch at 10:30 p.m. in the center of East Park.
An ice cream social presented by Gilligan's Island in Sherburne will commence after the lantern launch at 11 p.m. at the registration tent.
The Closing Ceremony is slated for 11:45 p.m., just before the 2017 Relay for Life of Chenango County's Final Lap at 12 a.m., midnight.
"Our hope is to create more awareness of what the American Cancer Society does and what the Relay for Life stands for with us moving our location downtown," said Shaw. "We hope all those that are in attendance stay until that final lap is walked at midnight. And we hope with all of the funds raised, we create a world with less cancer and more birthdays celebrated instead."
It is noted that donations of all amounts are welcomed and encouraged throughout the event to help contribute to its quest of raising $120,000. You may also contribute by supporting the Relay Store located at the gazebo from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. In addition to the store, Relay Teams at the event will be selling various food and drinks, raffling off prizes, and selling a number of fundraising items to add to their team's funds raised.
Music will be provided by Mike's DJ Service throughout the event. It's also reported that Rachel Ballin will facilitate various kids activities from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Attendees are reminded to bring a lawn chair for seating in the park.
