NORWICH – Local attorney Steve Natoli and Chenango County Assistant District Attorney Mike Genute each filed nominating petitions for their candidacy for Norwich City Court Judge on Wednesday, July 12, and Thursday, July 13 respectively at the Chenango County Board of Elections.

It's reported that Natoli and Genute each filed their candidacy on both the Republican and Conservative lines, and that the minimum number of signatures to effectively nominate a candidate is 78, or about 5 percent of the City's population.

Natoli said, "[On July 12], I have filed petitions containing over 550 signatures of City of Norwich residents supporting my candidacy for the position of Norwich City Court Judge. I am humbled by the overwhelming support that has been expressed by our local community since announcing my candidacy earlier this year."

Genute said, “I am proud to say that I personally witnessed well over 150 signatures for the purposes of being put on the ballot as a Republican candidate for Norwich City Court Judge. I had a great time meeting with so many people and appreciate the time everyone gave me to explain why I am the best candidate and have the most pertinent experience for the job."

The vacancy for Norwich City Court Judge will follow the retirement of the Hon. James Downey, who has held the position for the last 17 years.

Natoli said in a media release announcing his filing, “As both the national and local political climate has shifted in recent years, it is more important than ever that our local citizens participate in the election process by educating themselves about the candidates for positions.”

He continued, “Relevant legal experience for the job is an important consideration, including the breadth of experience for a court that regularly presides over so many areas of law. Equally important for the job of Norwich City Court Judge is the candidate’s temperament, personality and ability to render conscientious decisions in a fair and open-minded manner.”

In a release penned by Genute, the candidate noted, “As the next Norwich City Court Judge will occasionally hear felony cases in the Chenango County, along with regularly presiding over just about every criminal case in the City, I know the people throughout the City will do their research on who has the most relevant experience for the job and will go out and vote.”

A vote for the Republican and Conservative primaries will be held between Natoli and Genute on Tuesday, September 12. The general election is scheduled to follow on Tuesday, November 7.
