SHERBURNE – The rain was falling, Chenango County was facing flooding throughout, and yet the Sherburne Marauder PONY League Team was still ready to play some baseball – earning a playoff win against Delhi, at 5-4.
5-4, a respectable score for two respectable teams – yet it was once again Sherburne who just wouldn’t quit. With their backs against the wall and facing possible extra innings in a rain-soaked game on Friday, July 14, taking the walk off win.
Sherburne’s Nate Morgan stepped in to bat, managing to reach first on an error, Nick McDaniels walked, followed by a single on a bunt from Bret Bates – this all led to the defining play to push Sherburne over the top for the win in the bottom of the seventh inning.
With bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, and a 4-4 tied score, Preston Eaves took a shot for the team when he was hit by pitch – pushing the runners around the bases for the score and win.
Despite the win, hitting was not Sherburne’s strongest asset this time around – securing just two hits as a team. Bret Bates finished 1-3 with a run, as Gabe Irwin finished 1-2 with two RBI and a run. Eaves added a run and the aforementioned RBI, with Noah Posson, and Nate Morgan adding a run a piece.
This reduced hitting offensive showing – yet opportunistic in its own right – relied instead upon the base runners to do the work, in absence of a high-powered offense. Delhi failed to help their cause on the road with six errors committed in the loss.
Delhi was able to strike first – claiming a run in the second and third inning – taking the 2-0 lead. That is when Sherburne snagged a two-run inning for the tie. Repeating this process, Delhi moved ahead once again, scoring in the fifth and sixth for the 4-2 lead.
Sherburne maneuvered in two more runs in the sixth inning – for the 4-4 tie – all before earning their walk-off win in the seventh.
Taking the win on the mound for Sherburne wasTroy Fleming, pitching four innings, striking out five and walking just two. Fleming allowed just two hits. Preston Eaves pitched two innings, striking out two, walking two and allowing three hits. Ben Menard pitched one innings, allowing one hit in 14 pitches.
Having notched their first win of the playoffs, dropping Delhi 5-4 – Sherburne PONY League will advance to the next round where they will host Schenevus on Tuesday, July 18, at 5:30 p.m.
Notably, Schenevus defeated South Kortright 9-2 – while Edmeston (9-0 overall) will host Cooperstown (5-4 overall) on Monday, July 17, at 5:30 p.m.
