SHERBURNE – The powerful and opportunistic Sherburne PONY League team has fallen, getting upset in a revenge game with Schenevus, in the semifinals of the Otsenango PONY League playoffs.
Schenevus pounded Sherburne in a 12-2 beating on Tuesday, July 18, as Schenevus grinded in the early innings to take the early lead – and keep it.
Notably, Sherburne used a powerful statement win on July 10, over Schenevus to claim the Otsenango Division C championship. However, almost exactly a week later and it was Schenevus who reversed the script to upset the division champs to end their run in 2017 and advance to the championship game.
Errors, errors throughout the game proved to be the downfall of Sherburne, who committed seven errors in the elimination game. Schenevus – who only outhit Sherburne by three hits, at nine to six – committed just one error in the field.
Schenevus took the 2-1 lead following the first inning – but instead of having to manage a close game, Sherburne was quickly thrown in an uphill fight. The second inning saw Schenevus pour on five runs to Sherburne’s one – similarly, Schenevus tacked on four additional runs in the third inning to take the 11-2 lead.
Getting credited with the loss for Sherburne was Gabe Irwin – pitching 1.1 inning for four walks, no strikeouts and allowing four hits for five runs. Ben Menard, and Troy Fleming each saw their turn on the mound in relief. Menard pitched .2 of an inning for one strikeout and two walks, however, allowing three hits for six runs. Fleming pitched five innings for three strikeouts and four walks – allowing just two hits for one run.
The Schenevus pitchers – Zwill and Gaske – combined for five strikeouts and three walks allowing just six hits for two runs, one being earned.
The Marauders were able to silence Schenevus for three solid innings of play – from the fourth until the beginning of the seventh – however, in that time Sherburne failed to bring home any runs in their efforts. With the game outcome looking bleak for the Marauders, they stared at an 11-2 game heading into the seventh inning.
Schenevus padded the score with one final run to close out the game with a 12-2 win in Sherburne, sending the 2017 Division C champs home.
Best in the loss at the plate for Sherburne was Troy Fleming who finished 2-3. Gabe Irwin, Ron Demello, Bret Bates, and Noah Posson each snagged one hit a piece in their efforts – with Irwin grabbing and RBI and Posson adding a run. Preston Eaves recorded a run in the game.
“The coaching staff and I are so proud of the total commitment it takes from the players and parents. Most of these kids play three sports and then play summer baseball,” said Sherburne PONY League head coach Brian Hicks. “We won the division and that was our first goal. I want to thank Jim McDaniel, Ron Demello, Brad Bates, and Jeff Eaves for everything they did for this team.”
Sherburne PONY League concludes their 2017 season with a regular season record of 7-1-1, accompanying the Division C Championship, while holding an overall record of 8-2-1.
