SIDNEY – The 2017 Otsenango Pony League season came to a close on Friday, July 21, as the Cooperstown Hawkeyes’ fine pitching and offensive execution dropped the hammer on the Schenevus Dragons in a 15-2 drubbing.
One of the keys to the game was Cooperstown’s Kendall Haney who went the distance in the ballgame- pitching all seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out eight batters with zero walks.
Haney, who only threw 78 pitches on the night making quick work of the Schenevus offensive attack, throwing 75 percent of his pitches for strikes-the Hawkeye Hurler was dominate from sixty feet six inches away.
With Haney keeping the Dragons’ offensive effort at bay through his powerful pitching, the Hawkeye offensive proved to be equal to the task when it came to scoring runs.
The name of the game for the Cooperstown hitters at the dish was small ball- be patient and hit singles. And surely enough, the home team delivered on that promise. The top of the order for the Hawkeyes delivered the biggest blows with lead-off hitter Jackson Martz and number two hitter Alexander Poulson. Martz scored three runs, while having a day at the plate going 3-5 while knocking in an RBI of his own.
Meanwhile, Martz’s counterpart in Poulson replicated the lead-off hitter’s brilliance going 3-5 at the dish, scoring four runs and hitting in an RBI. Ben Tafuro and Haney each scored two runs for the Hawkeyes and Christopher Ubner and Ryan Palmatier each drove in two RBI each. To complete the Cooperstown offensive effort, Treston Emerick scored a run, while delivering an RBI, Jason Furnari scored a run and Samuel Rhodes drove in an RBI in the game.
Schenevus, couldn’t find its mojo to start the game and little went right for the Dragons over the course of the ballgame. Giving up 10 unanswered runs over the course of the first four and a half innings.
With Cooperstown finding the gaps it needed to get on base, Schenevus just couldn’t stop the rolling Hawkeyes- who recorded 13 hits and six walks in the ballgame. And to make matter’s worse, the Dragons were unable to make any offensive adjustments from the lights out pitching of Haney.
Due to rain, the 2017 Otsenango Pony League All-Star game will be played on Monday, August 1, at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown.
