Route 12 crash delays Norwich commuters

NORWICH – Traffic along State Highway 12 slowed to a crawl Monday evening after several rear-end collisions.

Though no one was injured Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Messina said the four-vehicle accident caused traffic congestion for about 30 minutes, while many commuters in the Norwich area were heading home from work.

“Unfortunately it happened at a bad time of day with a lot of cars on the road,” said Messina. “One person stopped, then the person behind them, hit them, and then the next, and the next.”

The accidents occurred at around 3:30 p.m. Monday just south of the City of Norwich, near a red light plaza intersection. The vehicles were all traveling north along the road.

Though all of the vehicles suffered minor damage and were drivable, clean-up was delayed after one of the shaken drivers accidentally locked his keys in his car while it was still in the roadway.

“Talk about a bad day,” sympathized Messina.

Police said the investigation would likely result in minor traffic tickets being issued.
