New law prohibits e-cigs on school grounds

CHENANGO COUNTY – Chenango County schools are among the ranks of schools statewide that will need to prohibit any e-cigarette use on school grounds, thanks to legislation signed by the governor on Tuesday.
The New York State Senate announced Tuesday that a Senate bill protecting the health of students by prohibiting e-cigarette use at schools has been signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo and is now law.
Supporters say the measure discourages smoking by children at a time when e-cigarette use among youth continues to increase. It’s among several measures passed by the Senate this year to protect public health from the risks of nicotine exposure.
Previously, e-cigarettes were not illegal on school property despite many school grounds being designated as “tobacco free.”
Two other Senate bills to protect public health from e-cigarettes have also passed both houses of Congress and will be sent to the Governor for review.
One would ban the use of electronic cigarettes in indoor areas covered by the Clean Indoor Air Act, as well as certain public outdoor areas where smoking cigarettes is prohibited. The other would require sellers to register with the state Department of Taxation and Finance if they sell electronic cigarettes and liquid nicotine but are not registered to sell tobacco products.
Proponents argue that both bills would limit exposure to secondhand smoke and close loopholes that allow some e-cigarette retailers to dodge laws that prohibit the sale of products to minors.
