Tops teams with Public Health to prevent lead poisoning
NORWICH – With an aim to “get the lead out,” the Chenango County Public Health Department is teaming up with Tops supermarket to teach about the link between diet and lead poisoning.
For the summer months, Public Health is sponsoring a “lead teaching tour” where eligible participants (those with a child age six or less) explore Tops in search of foods that offset the risks of lead.
“Many people don’t realize foods rich in calcium, iron, and vitamin C can help prevent lead poisoning,” explained Barbara Ryan, lead education coordinator for Public Health.
At the end of the 20-minute tour, participants get a $25 gift card to pay for healthy foods that combat lead poisoning, such as dairy products, greens, fresh fruits, and select meats.
