Debra Cubbedge to run as Bullthistle candidate for Norwich Town Council
NORWICH – Debra Cubbedge of Norwich has filed petitions with the Chenango County Board of Elections to run as candidate for Norwich Town Council on the independent Bullthistle line. Cubbedge is seeking election to the Council to put an end to one-party government in the Town of Norwich.
Cubbedge says she wants to encourage community members to become involved in town government and to give the voters a choice on election day. “In recent years, Republican candidates have run for town office with no opposition from the Democratic Party. Consequently, Republicans have governed with no input or oversight from Democratic and independent voters. This has led to a lack of transparency in government operations.”
Cubbedge, a retired Administrative Law Judge with the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, is a member of Chenango Links, a group of local activists who meet weekly to address local issues. Chenango Links has been particularly active in promoting increased transparency in Chenango County government.
On Tuesday, August 29, Norwich Democrats will hold a caucus to nominate candidates for Supervisor, Council and other Town offices. The caucus is open to all qualified registered Democrats in the Town of Norwich -- who may decide to run for office, participate in nominating candidates, or simply see how a caucus works.
Cubbedge says she is hoping to become the Democratic candidate, with an appropriate running mate, as there are two council positions up for election this year.
The caucus (rescheduled from an earlier date) will be held at the Norwich Town Hall at 157 County Road 32A. Participants must arrive before 7:00 p.m., after which time, doors will be locked and newcomers will not be admitted.
