Akshar joins community to purge prescription drugs

NORWICH – State Senator Fred Akshar is teaming up with Norwich Police, the Chenango Health Network, and the Southern Tier Aids Program (STAP) to encourage locals to “Shed the Meds.”

From noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Akshar and partnering agencies will be at Norwich City Hall collecting unused, unwanted, and outdated prescription drugs from area residents.

Community members are invited to safely and discreetly dispose of their old prescription pills and non-liquid medication to prevent these meds from ever falling into the wrong hands.

At 1 p.m., residents are also invited to learn how to save a life by attending STAP’s free Narcan training. Space is limited, so those wishing to attend are asked to register at Akshar.NYSenate.Gov.

These events continue Senator Akshar’s coordinated community effort to fight the heroin scourge.

Over the past two years, Akshar’s Shed the Meds events across the 52nd Senate District collected over 500 pounds of prescription drugs, getting an estimated street value of $180,000 worth of drugs off the street, according to local officials.
