Trail of Truth Memorial Walk set for Thursday
BINGHAMTON – For the second year, Truth Pharm, an organization that brings to the forefront information on the opiate epidemic, will be hosting its Trail of Truth walk.
In light of International Overdose Awareness Day on Aug. 24, the organization will spend time to honor those lost to substance use related causes in the Southern Tier.
This will be a walk and performance art piece.
According to founder Alexis Pleus, there is a family who decided to have their son’s service coincide with the walk so their family could be present for both. Their family will be traveling from Florida to attend the walk.
“We have a family who has been with Truth Pharm since the very very beginning, before Truth Pharm was even a thing... they are coming up from North Carolina to march with us to honor their son, Maxwell,” said Pleus.
A family is coming from Cooperstown that includes a 16-year-old boy who swam the length of Otsego Lake to raise awareness for addiction after losing his uncle, A.J., who will be honored in the walk.
Attendees are encouraged to wear black and bring photos or other signs.
A Broome County Rocks artist painted 84 rocks that will be used at the memorial walk. Some have been customized for people she knew, others were created from inspirations she gained after hearing stories of those who lost their battle.
Tombstones were created by family and friends of those who ultimately lost their battle with addiction. Families adorn these tombstones with memories and photos of their loved one.
Truth Pharm’s mission is to raise awareness, reduce the stigma and advocate for policy change to have a positive impact on the opioid and heroin epidemic.
Southern Tier AIDS Program, Inc. will be providing a Naloxone training at the end of the walk, and 30 kits will be available for those who take part in the training. Truth Pharm asked that only those with immediate need take a kit: active users, people in recovery, and family members of active users, as there are only 30.
The walk is set to begin at 4 p.m. at 7 Court Street in Binghamton.
The timeline of events is as follows:
4:00 p.m. - Family Memorial
4:15 p.m. - Press Interviews
4:30 p.m. - Announcements and speakers
