New legislation adds State Route 12 to Vietnam War tribute
CHENANGO COUNTY – New legislation will extend the”POW-MIA Memorial Highway” through portions of Chenango County as well as neighboring Broome and Madison counties.
A bill signed into law Monday pays tribute to the thousands of American service members who served in the Vietnam War.
Currently, the POW-MIA Memorial Highway runs along State Route 12 from Morristown in St. Lawrence County south through Jefferson, Lewis, and Oneida counties.
New legislation extends the memorial highway through Madison, Chenango, and Broome counties to the intersection of State Route 12 and State Route 12A in the Town of Chenango.
The legislation extending the Memorial highway is sponsored by Senator James Weward (R-ONeonta), and Assemblyman Clifford Crouch (R-Guilford).
“Every man and woman who dons a United State military uniform sacrifices for our nation and our way of life,” Seward said. “Those service member who were held captive during the Vietnam War, or who have never been found, experienced unspeakable pain and suffering. We owe it to these brave men and women and their families to keep their memory alive.”
Assemblyman Crouch said the reclassification is a fitting nod to those who have fought and sacrificed.
“During the Vietnam War, the U.S. lost thousands of brave American men and women, while many others were taken prisoner, never to come home again. These brave individuals gave the ultimate sacrifice, their freedom and ultimately their lives, to protect our country and freedoms,” he said.
