BRYANT LAKE – For the fifth consecutive year, the Norwich Purple Tornado Cheerleading team attended a 4-day overnight camp through the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) Cheerleading Camp. This camp provides high quality educational training for college and high school cheerleaders through summer camps or clinics on college campuses all over the world and is run former college cheerleaders that are now on staff for UCA.
Throughout the four days, the team was taught many new cheerleading such as sideline and timeout cheers, band dances and dance routines. The girls work on many skills to improve their jumps, motions, stunts and pyramids. UCA holds classes with all teams together to learn about leadership, team bonding, and dedication to their sport.
The Purple Tornado squad was evaluated every day on the different skills they were taught – with each assessment included a sideline chant, a timeout cheer and a dance routine. Norwich was awarded ‘Gold Superior’ ribbons at all three evaluations. “This group that went this year worked incredibly hard on learning the different chants, cheers and routines that UCA teaches over the course of two and a half days,” said Norwich Head Coach Marie DeSarro. “They all worked together to make sure that everyone was getting things right.”
On the final day of camp, the Norwich squad put together routines using the skills they were taught the previous three days, in front of all teams attending at Camp Championships. The Purple Cheerleading program was awarded second place in their ‘game day’ routine, which included a band dance, sideline chant and timeout cheer with stunts. Norwich continued their success as they also brought home a first place finish in their Extreme Routine performance that consists of a dance and a full-team pyramid. “We had a lot of newbies who have never even cheered before – so for them to step up and learn their skills in a few short days – to help our team win first and second place trophies was pretty impressive,” stated DeSarro.
A very special camp award handed out and voted on by the UCA Staff only is called the ‘Traditions Plaque’. This plaque goes to the team who demonstrates the spirit of team traditions all through the camp. Norwich was awarded with great honors and will carry bragging rights for a year.
Six Purple Tornado cheerleaders tried out for the camp’s All-American award in front of over 100 camp participants, performing different cheerleading skills. However, only 15 total cheerleaders were awarded this honor at our cheer camp. For Norwich, the two winners of the All-American title were Karissa Prindle and Shelby Rose. The other four young ladies representing the Norwich Cheerleading program were Amber Tierney, Mya Loughren, Kalliann Harrison, and Brianna Kempf for also trying out for All American.
The four senior cheerleaders, Kalliann, Brianna, Karissa and Shelby were recognized at camp for their dedication and leadership within our cheerleading program. The four girls have been given the opportunity, through UCA, to travel to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando, FL and preform in the Varsity Spirit Spectacular in early December. They will join over 800 high school cheerleaders and dancers from across the country.
The four girls have a combined goal of raising $5,000 to be able to attend their Disney World destination. Several fundraisers have been organized to help the four seniors. All Norwich home football games, and any events that the cheerleaders are participating at, a Chinese Auction will be held. The auction will run until the end of October. Anyone that would like to donate a prize or a basket to the auction can contact Head Coach Marie DeSarro directly at mtdesarro@gmail.com or call 607-316-0763. The girls will also be running the 50/50 raffle at all home JV Football games. Monetary donations to help fund the girls trip are also being accepted. Please contact Marie if interested or send a donation to at Norwich HS Cheerleading Boosters, PO Box 943, Norwich, NY 13815. Checks can be made out to Norwich HS Cheerleading Boosters (memo: Senior Trip).
