Ava Granquist helps Norwich edge CV, Norwich grabs first win of the season

BINGHAMTON – With the entire crowd anxiously awaiting the outcome of the final match – and the team score tied at 3-3 – it was Norwich’s Ava Granquist who secured the decisive fourth point.
Ava defeated Katie Mach of Chenango Valley, at 6-4, 7-5 in the fourth singles spot.
“It was a great match, we ended up squeezing it out 4-3,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart. “She (Ava) won 6-4 first set, then she was up 4-3 in the second. At 5-5 she was up 30-Love, was serving the next point and the girl rolled her ankle. She (Ava) went up 40-Love and basically won that game, then won the next to close her out.”
Ava was able to hold on for the wild 7-5 win over Mach, earning Norwich their first win of the 2017 season – a league win nonetheless.
Aside from Ava, Norwich saw Caroline Stewart earn a win in the singles category – while the duos of Natalie Bennati and Riley Marsh, and Parker Walsh and Katie Gawronski, each earned wins for the lady Tornado.
“Basically we took two out of four singles, and two out of three doubles. Caroline Stewart was down 4-1 in the second and then pulled off five straight games to take the third point,” said coach Stewart.
Caroline Stewart downed Kelly Smith of Chenango Valley at 6-3, 6-4 – in the top singles spot.
First doubles saw Norwich’s Natalie Bennati and Riley Marsh defeat Claire Harvey and Linsey Reardon at 6-4 and 6-3.
Impressively, at second doubles, Parker Walsh and Katie Gawronski of Norwich grabbed their first ever varsity tennis win over Teagan Nester and Haley Spencer of CV, crushing them at 6-1 and 6-1.
“Solid decisive doubles play at first and second,” said coach Stewart. “With Parker and Katie getting their first varsity win.”
The lady Tornado took tough 3-setter losses at second singles and third doubles. With a two-set loss coming at third singles.
Alexa Attleson grabbed the win at second singles from senior Megan Burke, at 2-6, 6-4 and 6-2.
“For Megan Burke, score is tied 4-4 in the second. Loses two deuce games, and loses the second set 6-4,” said coach Stewart.
At third singles, it was Katerina Retzlaff of the CV Warriors who took a 6-4 and 6-2 win over Olivia Granquist.
In the doubles play, the Norwich duo of Logan Fredenburg and Erica Gage fell victim to CV’s Morgan Whittington and Molly Grady at 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3.
“But the night belonged to Ava (Granquist). With the matched tied 3-3 and everyone watching Ava came through for the Norwich Tornado girls, to give Norwich their first win of the season,” said coach Stewart.
Next up for Norwich (1-1 overall), they will be opening the season at home on Tuesday, September 5, when Susquehanna Valley comes to Norwich to play at 4 p.m
