NORWICH – The Lady Purple Tornado girls soccer team took home a tie with rival Oneonta Tuesday, September 12, on their home turf.
The game looked like a table tennis match as the ball would constantly go back and forth between the two halves of the field.
The first-half of the game would end in a 0-0 tie with the ball mostly in the Yellowjackets offensive half of the field. It was in the second half that Norwich would kick it up a notch and really put pressure on in their offensive push.
Oneonta would start the scoring with a goal by Meredith Smithling, just under the 18 minute mark in the second half. But Norwich would answer seven minutes later with a goal by Hannah Klockowski, with an assist from teammate Sydney Coggins.
Three and half minutes later, Coggins would record her own goal, giving Norwich the lead 2-1. The Yellowjackets would respond with a goal by Hannah Johnson at the 31:36 mark.
Both teams would have opportunities in the overtime sessions but would not be able to capitalize
The Yellowjackets would take 13 shots on goal but Norwich goalkeeper Saige Benedict would record a 83.3 percent save percentage for the game, only allowing two to find the back of the net, after a regulation and two ten minute overtimes. Benedict would have help from her defense on one shot as the team recorded one save.
