UV boys soccer fall to Whitney Point in Sidney's Shupperd tournament championship
SIDNEY – Four teams squared off this past Saturday, with Whitney Point emerging as the 2017 champions and Chenango County's Unadilla Valley Storm taking home second.
Advanicing to the finals, UV was thwarted by a second half corner kick sent in the winning shot from Whitney Point – who won 2-1.
Whitney Point took advantage at the 20 minute mark when Storm defender James Peterson attempted to turn a through ball wide, only to find Whitney Point's Alfonso Perna waiting to pounce, Perna placed a well positioned shot to the corner of the net to give Whitney Point the 1-0 lead.
With approximately two minutes remaining in the first half, UV Storm freshman, Devon Fairchild, made a nifty run that resulted in a Penalty Kick. Accoring to UV head coach Ryan Houck, Fairchild was injured on the play, Storm Midfielder and captain Brady George stepped up and burried a Penalty Kick to the top left corner – equalizing the game up at 1-1.
"It's unfortunate that we lost today, but this weekend was about discovering who we are as a team. I feel as though the players have figured out their identity and we have a promising second half to the season remaining," said coach Houck.
The second half of the championship game saw a back and forth affair, mostly at the midfield when a corner kick and scrum for the ball lead to Perna's second, and game-winning goal with 9:13 to remain on the clock.

Prior to their championship loss, UV downed fellow Chenango County team, Bainbridge-Guilford, by another tight score at 2-1.
Avenging an earlier season loss, the Storm toppled the Bobcats in the first round of the Shupperd Tournament at Sidney. The UV Storm were caught napping early, when Bainbridge-Guilford's midfielder Xavier Cherniak connected on a bouncing ball on the 18 yard line to score just 45 seconds into the match.
Coach Houck enjoyed the resilience that his team displayed this past weekend – as the Storm quickly retaliated when Shawn Contreras scored his first ever varsity goal on a pass from Devon Fairchild. Contreras was able to nutmeg the Bobcat sweeper, Colin Perlie, and placed a shot low and on the corner beating the B-G keeper, Graham.
Brady George followed up Contreras' goal later in the first with a sweet second chance volley that went to the upper 90 past an outstretched Perlie. In the second half, the UV defense remained stout, holding B-G scoreless for the 2-1 first round win.

In the consolation game, played between Bainbridge-Guilford and host Sidney – it was the Bobcats who edged out the Warriors of Sidney for the 1-0 win to take home third place and hand Sidney a last place finish this past Saturday.
Ryan Porter scored in the second half for the Bobcats, securing the win. Goalkeeper Zach Graham for B-G also recorded his fourth shutout of the year in the 1-0 consolation win.
Next up for Bainbridge-Guilfrod boys soccer, they will play at home against Unatego on Monday, September 18, at 6 p.m.
