Norwich tennis continues to show improvement, tops Sabers for third win of the week
CONKLIN – The Norwich Purple Tornado tennis team is now an astounding 7-1 overall – after their latest 6-1 win over Susquehanna Valley.
Norwich traveled to Susquehanna Valley High School on Thursday, September 21, for what was a rematch with the Sabers – a match that Norwich won with some difficulty at 5-2, and with three points being three-setters.
This time around, there was a vast improvement of individual play across the board – resulting in a much cleaner 6-1 win on the road.
“Tonight’s 6-1 win shows that we continue to improve. My concern was a letdown after yesterday’s big win against Vestal. We played solid from start to finish,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “This was one of the toughest three match runs that I can remember, these girls are fighters and tough competitors, it is awesome what they did.”
Coming off an upset win over Vestal on Wednesday, the Tornado girls were given not time to enjoy the win – let alone any down time. Playing again the very next evening, it was once again first doubles who secured the fourth and winning point for Norwich.
Riley Marsh and Natalie Benenati easily downed Amber Adams and Jocelyn Jackowski in straight sets at 6-4 and 6-2.
The nail bitter of the night went to second doubles – Katie Gawronski and Parker Walsh of Norwich – who won in two sets at 7-6(3) and 7-6(1).
Norwich’s lone loss came at the third doubles slot, as Sha-Diamond Evans and Kayla Henry defeated Norwich’s Samantha Gage and Logan Fredenburg at 6-3 and 7-6 (7-5).
“(Third doubles) After a rocky start fought back in the second set to lose the tie breaker,” said coach Stewart.
In singles play, the lady Tornado swept the competition on Thursday night – securing four wins.
“Ava and Olivia both played very well, they set the tone of the match. They both got out to a great start and never let go of their leads,” said coach Stewart.
The Granquist sisters held down the third and fourth singles spots – with Olivia besting Elizabeth Moelder at third singles at 6-2 and 6-3. Ava earned the fourth singles win over Sara Figura at 6-3 and 6-4.
“Caroline rebounded well after her loss yesterday and Megan Burke stumbled early on, went down 3-0 in the first set and then went on a 12-1 run to close her match out,” said coach Stewart.
After falling to the top Section IV singles player on Wednesday, Caroline battled back for a nice rebound win over Jenna Yezzi at 6-3 and 6-2. Megan Burke added a win at second singles when she defeated Camille Mastronardi in straight sets at 6-3 and 6-1.
Norwich tennis (7-1 overall) is taxed with one final match this week – bringing the total to four matches in as many days – as Norwich will be on the road on Friday, September 22, when they head to Johnson City for a 4 p.m. time.
