Crimson Knights chop through Trojan ranks with late game heroics
GREENE – The two premiere Chenango County field hockey programs, the Greene Trojans and the visiting Afton Crimson Knights squared off in Trojan territory on Thursday – with Afton emerging victorious at 5-2.
“We scored first, then going into the half they were up 2-1. We didn’t play great the first half, we just were getting out hustled a little bit,” said Greene head coach Christine McCabe. “We talked at halftime, made some adjustments. We ended up scoring and it was 2-2 for a while. Then with like 10 minutes to go (in the game) the floodgates opened.”
Scoring for the Trojans was Claire Moxley with one goal – while McKenna Sergi added a goal of her own. Afton saw strikes from Janelle Volk (one goal), Makaela Mills (one goal), Sam Schoelier (one goal), Casey East (one goal), and Madison Baciuska (one goal and one assist) – Abby Beaulieu added one assist.
“We had plenty of chances to score, we had plenty of corners, we just weren’t converting. They had two quick goals. Our team was off, our defense, our goalie, and Afton was just on today. Afton was really good tonight,” said coach McCabe. “It was a close game the whole time then the last ten minutes we didn’t play great.”
Afton’s two quick strikes at the end of the game made an even 3-2 matchup turn into a 5-2 lopsided win on the road.
Afton had seven shots on goal and just four corners – while Greene managed to outdo Afton at both with nine shots on goal and six corners.
“They didn’t have a lot of shots but when they did shoot the ball went in. And that was the opposite with us, we had a lot of shots and it didn’t go in,” said coach McCabe.
Next up for Greene field hockey (4-3 overall), they will be at Vestal on Saturday, September 23, at 7 p.m.
“They are another team that is tough. We have to make sure we play well or that is another team they can sneak up on us,” said coach McCabe.
Afton field hockey (8-1 overall), they will get the weekend off before heading to play Deposit-Hancock on Monday, September 25, at 4:30 p.m.
