Valley Heights split girls and boys soccer double header
NORWICH – The Valley Heights Lady Crusaders pulled off an unexpected victory 2-0 over the visiting Syracuse Eagles Friday afternoon.
With a victory for the Eagles the last match-up against, Syracuse gave the Crusaders a challenging game and pulled out on top, 2-0.
Syracuse was #1 in the league with a 3-0-1 record going into the game and with only two subs, the Lady Crusaders knew they had a tough game ahead.
In the first half, Crusader Emily Davis had a beautiful cross to the far post to teammate Macey Montgomery, who one-touched it into the net, giving Valley Heights a 1-0 lead.
The goal really gave the Crusaders a mental and physical boost. Valley Heights chose to play more defensively following the goal. Not allowing the Eagles break the defense, the Lady Crusaders had over 17 shots on goal.
In the second half, Davis was covered by defensive players for the Eagles, but somehow managed to pull off a shot that sailed to the back of the net, adding to the Lady Crusaders lead.
Valley Heights Keeper Brielle Armstrong had some great saves and didn't let the ball in the net once, giving herself a shut-out over the Eagles.
On the boys side, the Valley Heights Crusaders played the game mostly on their heels in the 4-2 loss to the powerhouse Syracuse Eagles, giving a valiant effort on defense at the end of the contest on Friday night at Weiler Park.
The Eagles took the early lead 10 minutes in when midfielder Isaac Depuy nailed a shot from just beyond the 18 yard line.
Syracuse kept the pressure on the Crusaders defense as recored another Eagles goal was scored by David Mathewson at the 20 minute mark.
Valley Heights was bogged down in their own end until Crusaders forward Jared Graham broke out and carried the ball downfield. Graham earned his team a free-kick 10 yards outside the box. Teammate Alex Evans took the free-kick, curving shot into the top right corner of the net, tacking on the first goal for Valley Heights.
In the second half Syracuse didn’t let up, scoring two more goals by the Depuy, earning himself a hat trick on the evening.
Evans converted a penalty kick with 10 minutes left in the game to bring Valley Heights within two goals but that would be as close they would get before the game ended.
