Norwich tennis continues to climb, earns fourth win in one week
JOHNSON CITY – Norwich’s varsity tennis team just completed a four-game run in a week’s span – moving their record from 4-1 to 8-1, following their latest 7-0 win over Johnson City.
Norwich capped off a busy week when they toppled the Johnson City Wildcats at 7-0, this past Friday, September 22.
“We originally had this match scheduled earlier in the season with goal of giving us match experience but the weather played havoc with the schedule and finding a date to fit became hard,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart. “So that is why we played the fourth match this week. It was an impressive week to finish 4-0 and be 8-1. These girls are real competitors. Most of the matches went straight sets tonight.”
The entire lady Tornado lineup earned a solid win heading into the weekend, as the team proved their worth this past week.
According to coach Stewart, earning ‘match of the night’ honors was third doubles – Logan Fredenburg and Erica Gage. Fredenburg and Gage defeated JC’s duo of Maia Tripp and Tasia Robinson at 6-1, 3-6, and 7-6 (7-2).
“We won the first set easily, lost the second set and trailed most of the third. In fact, we were down 6-5, 40-love in that third set,” said coach Stewart. “We fought off five match points to win the 12th game to take the set into a tie breaker, where Norwich prevailed 7-2 and won the third set and take the seventh point. Great match to watch. Sometimes looking too far ahead can be overwhelming when you’re playing from behind. I just kept telling the girls one point at a time and they made one heck of a comeback.”
All of the other six matchups were decided in straight sets – Norwich claiming the wins.
At first singles, Caroline Stewart defeated Rhiannon Reid at 6-3 and 6-3. Second singles saw Megan Burke down Breona Bogart at 6-1 and 7-5. Third singles, Olivia Granquist earned a nice 6-4 and 6-0 win over Tessa Convertino. Rounding out singles play at fourth singles, Jasmine Khamphanthirath of JC fell to Ava Granquist at 6-0 and 6-2.
Norwich’s top duo of Riley Marsh and Natalie Benenati earned an easy win at 6-2 and 6-3 over JC’s Alana Samounty and Mayna Sengsouvanh. Katie Gawronski and Parker Walsh of Norwich took the 6-0 and 6-3 win away from Johnson City’s Haley Mangini and Precilaire Joseph.
Next up for Norwich tennis (8-1 overall, 6-1 league), they will play on the road against division rival Chenango Forks on Monday, September 25, at 4 p.m.
