NFD welcomes two new firefighters
NORWICH – The Norwich Fire Department welcomed two new firefighters to its staff last Tuesday night after the City of Norwich Common Council approved the appointments.
Following the recommendation by Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo, Tyler Zelsnack and Dan Kerila were each granted permanent appointments as firefighters in the NFD effective yesterday, September 25.
"I am very happy to have each of these young men joining our fire department family," said Chawgo. "As they begin their careers as firefighters here in Norwich, they each bring the required skills and abilities along with their own uniqueness to, not only the fire department, but also to our community at large."
The two appointments are contingent upon Zelsnack and Kerila each relocating their residence to within 10 miles of the Norwich Fire Station within 90 days of their appointments. Zelsnack is currently from Marathon, NY, and Kerila from Endicott, NY.
The appointments were each approved and duly adopted after the Common Council voted 4-1 in favor of the new hires, with Alderman Ward 1 Matthew Caldwell voting nay.
"I would like to thank our community, along with the Mayor and members of our City Council, who continue to support the fire department," said Chawgo.
