Lady Storm claims second tournament title of the season

OTSELIC — A convincing 9-0 win over Cato-Meridian followed by a dominant 7-0 victory DeRuyter on Friday, Unadilla Valley’s girls soccer team brought home another piece of hardwood for the trophy case.
Last Wednesday, the Storm faced Cato-Meridian in the opening match of the First Annual Otselic Valley Varsity Soccer tournament.
Kyleigh George opened up UV’s scoring clinic on an assist from Julia Oglesby. UV’s Shelby Meade then recorded the next two goals for her team to add to the total.
Cearah DaCostafaro found the back of the net on a ball from George for goal number four by the Lady Storm.Oglesby wanted in on the scoring action next as she fired a shot past Cato-Meridian’s keeper Meghan McCarthy.
McCarthy was shot at 25 times by Unadilla Valley, stopping 19 on the evening.
The last goal recorded by a UV player was from Paige Catena, giving the Storm a total of six goals from 5 different players.
Cato-Meridian added three goals on to UV’s final score as their defensive mishaps caused the ball to go into their own net each time.
The second game of the girls double header on Wednesday, September 20, was the Lady Vikings against DeRuyter. A matchup that has happened already once this season, DeRuyter took down the host Vikings with a score of 3-1.
In a well-played game by both side, OV’s lone goal would come on a PK from Jessica Comfort.
The Lady Vikings did create 13 shot opportunities through the contest but couldn’t finish on any of them – an MO on the season for Otselic Valley.
DeRuyter’s intensity was an display for the entire contest and OV had a tough time matching as they capitalized with three goals, all by different members of the squad.
Tayler Marshall, Graycee Forrest and Mikayla Quigley snuck the ball past Vikings Goalie Lacy Wood. Forrest also recorded an assist for DeRuyter.
The Vikings and the Storm switched opponents for the Friday’s championship and consolation double header for the girls side of the tournament.
Cato-Meridian’s Miranda Myhill-Laforce took advantage of defensive mishaps by the Lady Vikings and netted the ball twice, giving C-M a two tally marks for the contest.
The Vikings goal came off the foot off Summer Sargent but that was the only goal for the tournament host as they were bested at 2-1 in the consolation game.
The Storm took the field against DeRuyter and cleaned house as they took the tournament crown with a final of 7-0.
UV freely fired 20 shots on goal Friday night as DeRuyter’s Paige Russell could save only 13 of them.
DaCostafaro recorded a hat trick plus an extra goal for UV on their way to another rout over their opponent. George assisted on one of the four.
Meade and Catena each netted another goal during the tournament, giving each a total of two over the two games and Shaylyn joined in on the scoring frenzy, adding a goal of her own.
Otselic Valley will be on the prowl for a league win against Brookfield on Tuesday, September 26.
