ONEONTA – Four sets of high school volleyball – all within at most three points – Norwich gave it their all to try to topple Oneonta on their home court but came up just shy at 3-1.
“It was a hard-fought battle tonight as my girls did not give up. We just came up short,” said Norwich head coach Shelly Alger.
Norwich volleyball traveled over the hill to take on their old rival in Oneonta on Tuesday.
3-1 as a final score suggests that Oneonta held the upper hand for most of the match – however, Norwich scored at least 22 points in all four sets played to attempt to push the Yellowjackets for the win.
Oneonta stole the opening set at 25-23. However, Norwich evened the match in the second set with a 25-23 win of their own. At 1-1 for the team score, it was Oneonta who snagged two close wins to take the win away from a determined Tornado squad – third set at 25-23, and a fourth set at 25-22.
Oneonta did not report any individual game statistics. Norwich had many girls step up in the attempt to take the win. Layla Burton had 16 digs; Ripley Strong had one ace, seven assists and one dig; Riley Strong had five assists and two digs; Kalie Binelli had 10 aces, four kills and 12 digs; Alexis Taylor had two aces, six kills and eight digs; LeahAnne Humphrey had one ace, 11 assists and two kills; Jazmin Rodriguez had three aces, nine kills and 15 digs; Virginia Maiurano had one assist, three kills and six digs; and Gabby Eddy had seven kills, one block and two digs.
Norwich volleyball (4-2 overall, 3-2 league), will be traveling to take on the Black Knights of Windsor for a big matchup on Thursday, October 5, at 6:30 p.m.
