Irwin leads the Marauders to fourth straight win Friday
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville grew their record to 4-2 after beating the West Canada Valley Indians, 28-12 on Friday night.
The Marauders opened the season 0-2 after back-to-back losses to two undefeated teams, Dolgeville and Canastota. Since, S-E has won four in a row.
The Indians jumped on the scoreboard first after Kris Crossett punched in a four-yard touchdown run, taking a 6-0 lead into the second quarter.
The Marauders responded in the second as quarterback Gabe Irwin scored from the one yard line. The point after attempt was no good to keep the score tied at 6-6.
Sherburne-Earlville tacked on another one before the end of the half to take the lead 12-6 as Irwin connected with stand-out running back Lincoln Owen for a 54 yard touchdown completion. The two point conversion pass attempt from Irwin failed, keeping the score 12-6 at intermission.
Irwin continued to shine in the contest as he extended the deficit in the third as he found Dawson Lagoe on a five-yard score. This time, Irwin was able to find an open Owen and the Marauders added on two more. After three, Sherburne-Earlville led 20-6.
The Indians attempted a comeback in the fourth as Kaleb Pohleven scored for West Canada Valley’s defense after he recovered a fumble by the Marauders. The two point conversion for the Indians stalled as the scoreboard remained 20-12 following Pohleven’s touchdown.
