Bail set for Norwich man facing life in prison
NORWICH – A Norwich man facing felony charges after being arrested for selling heroin and resisting arrest, appeared in Chenango County Court on Friday to request bail.
Joshua Shurock, 28, was remanded back to the Chenango County Correctional Facility after County Judge Frank B. Revoir Jr. granted a $30,000 cash bail request made by Public Defender John Cameron, following the arraignment. Shurock had been previously held without bail and is facing life in prison, said prosecutors.
Revoir discussed the charges against Shurock after an incident took place in August, where he was accused of fighting with police and selling heroin.
Just before 3:30 p.m. on August 24, Shurock was allegedly in possession of five individually packaged envelopes of heroin with the intent to sell, reported police. He was arrested following a foot chase with a Norwich Police detective, and later charged with assaulting the officer. His arrest took place on Court Street, after police said they received a narcotics tip.
Shurock was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a class B felony; criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, a class A misdemeanor; assault in the second degree, a class D felony; and resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor.
Assistant District Attorney Michael Ferrarese told the court that Shurock was known to local law enforcement and his criminal history was one of the worst he’s seen. Shurock was charged with one previous violent felony, a burglary in 2011, as well as 2 non-violent felonies since then, said Ferrarese. “He has every reason to flee this jurisdiction,” he said.
He is scheduled to appear back in court at a later date.
