DEPOSIT – Bainbridge-Guilford football, a team who prior to this week had successfully won nine of their past 10 games was rightfully getting some buzz in the state-rankings. Deposit-Hancock made sure that buzz was conveyed on Saturday.
Bainbridge-Guilford came into the game on Saturday ranked 20th in New York State for Class D football. Leaving Deposit after the 29-3 blowout loss, Bainbridge-Guilford will need to reassess their plans heading into the post-season.
Deposit-Hancock played hard and with emotion, hosting the Bobcats on what was their homecoming game. What better way to treat your hometown fans on homecoming than to earn the win and put up 439 yards of total offense.
This mark outpaced B-G, who gained just 156 total yards with 72 of those belonging to running back Ben Bivar.
At the half, Deposit-Hancock only led the Bobcats by a margin of 14-3. However, thanks to a well planned offensive scheme, which saw four Deposit-Hancock touchdowns – each in a different quarter – essentially wore down and cracked the opportunistic Bobcat defense.
Jackson Miller, of Deposit-Hancock, collected 212 yards on the ground off of 30 carries, while adding two catches for 34 yards.
In the first half, Miller recorded two of his three scores, punching in for two short-yardage scores – one yard out (first quarter, 4:15 left), and one yard out (second quarter, 11:10 left).
Avoiding the shutout, B-G notably may have the best kicker in all of Section IV – as Trevor Halaquist sliced the uprights for a 45-yard field goal at 6:58 left in the half. Halaquist added two punts for 52 yards and the long going for 36 yards.
This was the first and final time Bainbridge-Guilford scored in the contest.
Unfortunately, Halaquist was marked with two interceptions for the Bobcats – throwing for 5-13 for 55 yards and his two drive-ending picks.
It wasn’t just the deadly rushing attack that barried B-G into the ground on Saturday. The passing game of QB Darren Shaver, threw for 128 yards and a touchdown in the game, while going 7-9.
Shaver hooked up with Austin Lenio for a 24-yard passing touchdown – expanding the lead to 21-3 with just 5:56 left to play in the third.
Back to the bread and butter, Jackson Miller punched his way in from 11 yards out to claim his third touchdown and take the game to 29-3 with just :40 left.
As the statement was made by the host team, Bainbridge-Guilford was sent back home to regroup as the Bobcats will live to fight another day.
With the win for Deposit-Hancock (5-2 overall, 4-1 Division V), they locked up a second-place spot in the division while landing fourth-seed in the upcoming Section IV Class D playoffs. Deposit-Hancock will host Greene (5-2 overall, 3-1 Division VI), this coming Friday, October 20, at 7 p.m.
Bainbridge-Guilford (5-2 overall, 3-2 Division V), will also secure a playoff spot, claiming third in their division and be granted an eighth-seed in the Class D playoffs.
B-G will need to regroup fast, as they will head to previously first ranked in New York State, Sidney (6-1 overall, 4-0 Division VI). Sidney is coming off their first loss of the season to Newark Valley (7-0 overall, 5-0 Division IV), when NV bested the Warriors at 49-28. Bainbridge-Guilford will be looking for the big upset come this Friday, October 20, at 7 p.m.
