Trojans take down Delhi for 3-0 2017 MAC Championship
ONEONTA – Home or away means nothing to the Greene Trojans Boys Soccer team of 2017, who earned themselves the MAC Championship this past Saturday.
Technically playing as the away team, Greene traveled over the hill to play state-ranked Delhi of Class D at Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta on Saturday.
Three Greene players scored in the championship game, and the Trojans easily disposed of the Bulldogs at 3-0 – proving to all present, why Greene is currently ranked second in New York State for Class C boys soccer.
At the half, Greene managed to hold a nice 2-0 lead over Delhi, a team who is no stranger to wins on the season as they are currently ranked 20th for Class D boys soccer.
Bradley Taft opened up the scoring for his 29th goal of the season with a shot outside the 18-yard line into the upper left frame of the goal with 21:36 on the clock in the first half,” said Greene head coach Rick Tallman. “Alec Frair netted a shot off a Taft assist with three minutes left in the half.”
Up 2-0, Greene continued to rain down shots on the Delhi goalkeeper, Ben Arehart, who notably managed to make eight saves in his efforts.
River McCumiskey sealed the win with an insurance goal in the second period with 14:49 on the clock off an individual effort in front of the net, off a served ball from Mikey Repp.
Taking the 3-0 win on Saturday, Greene’s main advantage in the championship game was the sheer amount of shots the Trojans earned – taking 16 shots on goal and two corners. Delhi saw just six shots on goal and two corners.
Helping secure the win, Greene’s Kevin Gyurik made six saves while playing in goal for Greene.
Greene boys soccer (15-1 overall) and coming hot off their dominating MAC Championship, will now advance to the Section IV Class C playoffs.
Greene earned the second seed in the playoffs, behind Seton Catholic (first seed, 9-3-1 overall), and therefore will receive a first round bye. The Trojans, having the better seed, will host the winner of the Sidney (6-7 overall) and Unatego (10-5-1 overall) match-up in the quarterfinals of the Section IV Class C tournament on October 21, at 3:30 p.m.
