Sew Nice to donate handmade quilts to local veterans in November

NORWICH – This isn't the first year Sew Nice in Norwich has donated time and skill to make quilts for veterans, but this is the first year they're keeping it local.
Owner of Sew Nice Diane Marvin said, "We've done Quilts of Valor in the past and they've gone literally all over the world, and we thought it was time that we did something to honor our local veterans. Everyone who has worked on the project is really excited that we're keeping it local this year."
According to the Quilts of Valor Foundation website, the quilts are awarded to U.S. military service members and veterans who have been touched by war. A Quilt of Valor is a lifetime award. The Foundation was created in 2003 by founder Catherine Roberts, and spread across the nation and beyond through word-of-mouth and the internet.
Since the start of the project in June, around 20 volunteers have assisted in all different aspects of preparation, from making individual quilt blocks to the assembly of the quilts, and will continue to work until completion.
Even though this is the first year Sew Nice will be doing this for local veterans, they are expecting to make it an annual occurrence, aiming to present them around the same timeframe each year. They will be presenting the quilts on November 11: Veterans Day.
Marvin said, "Even if you're not a quilter, you can help with this wonderful project," adding that donations are greatly appreciated to help purchase supplies such as backing, batting, fabric, etc.
Sew Nice is located at 6142 State Highway 12 in Norwich, the same plaza as Aldi's. A schedule of the store's classes and events are located on the website, www.sewnicenorwich.com. If you have any questions, call the store at (607) 334-2477. To become a member of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, visit the website at www.QOVF.org.
