Norwich Marching Band to hold 44th Fall Festival
Norwich – The Norwich High School Marching Band will host, and compete in, it's 44th annual Fall Festival field band show along with four other schools; Westmoreland, Johnson City, Union-Endicott and Cicero North Syracuse.
Norwich will compete first, their performance is called Dreams of Persia which will include songs called The Bazaar, Magic Carpets and Snake Charmers. The marching band has participated in four competitions so far this year and have performed better and better at each one. Norwich is currently third in their division, Small Schools Division III.
Band Director Megan Carpenter says it's her first year participating in the event. "We have fun at the football games but definitely the competitions give us a chance to shine a little bit," she says. "We love the support from the community for this event, I think that's why it's able to be so successful, because the community really comes in and supports us."
Members of the marching band and the executive council Robert Brown, Stephanie Carpenter, Emma Larsen and Kaitlyn Thomas are excited about the hometown show, and are hoping for a good turnout.
Robert Brown said, "The performance is big for us as a band because if we invite other band students to come in, they can see what we're doing. They can see that we're having fun, see that it's actually real business and maybe we can get more people to join. It's a reach out opportunity for us"
"It builds awareness for the band and promotes us to other bands, and also to Norwich itself." said Kaitlyn Thomas.
When asked what performing at home in a competition compared to performing at a football game meant to them, Thomas said, "It's It's definitely more comfortable here than it would be somewhere else, because at least we know the area, you know where you have to be."
"There's so much more support (at home) rather than an away competition," said Stephanie Carpenter. The teachers at the Norwich High School all received invitations, and the student members of the executive council urge everyone to come see the show.
The show starts, rain or shine, at 7 p.m. on Saturday October 21 at the Norwich High School Stadium, ticket prices are $6 for students, and $8 for the general public. There will be a full concession stand and merchandise available for purchase.
In addition to the field show competition on Saturday, the Norwich HS marching band will hold their annual performance, usually held at the YMCA, on Saturday October 28 at the high school stadium. They will also compete in the New York State Field Band Competition next Sunday, October 29 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.
