NHS’ Stewart and Burke finish fourth at State qualifiers; miss state tournament by one place

BINGHAMTON – The Norwich doubles team of Caroline Stewart and Megan Burke finished a single place away from going to the New York State Tennis Tournament, taking fourth in the State qualifiers this past weekend.
“Caroline and Megan played really well all weekend,” said Norwich head coach John Stewart.
Taking an loss to Horseheads in their final match, Norwich lost the third spot to the states to the team they beat in the first round on the first day.
“Looking at the tournament it came down to 4 teams competing for 1 spot. I give both girls a ton of credit for getting to a position to get that last spot,” said Stewart.
Playing in a great match against the doubles team of Mackenzie Hyde and Alaina Strife From Horseheads in the first round, Norwich’s Stewart and Burke took the first set in dominating fashion, taking full advantage of a nervous opponent. Norwich won the set 6-3.
Closing the match in a second set tie breaker, 7-6, turned out to be the best play of the tournament for Lady Tornado. “Megan was solid from the base line, setting up shots for Caroline at the net. It was really fun to watch,” Stewart said of the second set.
In the second match against Union-Endicott, the doubles team Brianna Harmon and Cailey Haynes played better than Burke and Stewart. “We knew that U-E was probably the second best team there,” commented Stewart.
Having to win two in a row to make it to the state tournament, Norwich started the second day against Chenango Valley. Playing nervous, Burke and Stewart came from behind in both sets to take the match. Being down 5-2 to Katie Mach and Kelly Smith in the second set, Norwich played a hard game to create the comeback and close out the match. “It was a great come back in very tight conditions,” said Stewart.
This set up the rematch with Hyde and Strife from Horsheads for the final spot to go to states.
Having set point in the first, Burke and Stewart couldn’t close the set, allowing Hyde and Strife to get the momentum. “We just couldn’t get it back as we lost the set in a tie breaker,” commented Stewart. Hyde and Strife dashed Burke and Stewart’s hopes of making it to state with the 6-3 in the second set.
“I give Horseheads credit. They figured out how to beat us with our aggressive style. They were able to neutralize Caroline at net and that was the difference,” said Stewart of Horsehead in the final match.
“A disappointing end but it was a great run to even be there. We finished as Class B champs, fourth place in Section IV. We had an 8-4 overall team record with team placing second at sectionals. Really not a bad and a great way for Caroline and Megan to finish their high school careers. They both will be sorely missed,” commented Stewart of the season.
