NHS Reality Check Youth commemorate Seen Enough Tobacco day

NORWICH – Reality Check youth at Norwich High School joined forces with high school faculty and local businesses on Friday, October 13 to commemorate the first Seen Enough Tobacco (SET) day in New York State.

Reality Check youth decorated pumpkins and arranged them into a giant number 13 at the event to represent the average age of a new smoker as part of their mission to bring awareness to the problem of tobacco industry store targeting youth in their marketing tactics.

October 13 has been proclaimed Seen Enough Tobacco day statewide because studies show tobacco marketing is a proven cause of youth smoking.

“We've seen enough tobacco promotions and smoking,” said Morgan Burdick, sophomore at NHS. “The solution is to change our community so that tobacco and tobacco use is not the norm.”

Tobacco Free Zone and Reality Check in Chenango County are now seeking support from community members to stand up in an effort to eliminate tobacco marketing and advertising in places where youth can see them.

Community members who have signed a letter of support will receive Seen Enough Tobacco lawn signs highlighting a tobacco fact.

A release from Tobacco-Free Zone Cortland, Tompkins, and Chenango Counties indicates that there are 49 tobacco and electronic cigarette retailers across Chenango County.

It further thats that within the City of Norwich, 55 percent of local retailers fall within 1,000 feet of youth-related locations, like parks, child care facilities, the YMCA, places of worship, game shops, library, youth bureau, the bowling alley, and Colonia Theater.

Reality Check youth assert that children and teenagers are routinely exposed to tobacco marketing on a daily basis.

“A number of New York communities have taken action to protect youth from tobacco marketing but we’ve got more work to do—and we’ve got the power to do it,” said Burdick. “For example, the cities of Binghamton and Newburgh, along with the counties of Cayuga, Ulster, and Sullivan, have all adopted policies to address tobacco marketing and sales near schools and other youth-friendly facilities.”
