JORDAN – According to school officials, the 31-19 Marauder win marked the first football postseason victory for Sherburne-Earlville School District in more than 50 years during Friday’s Section III Class C football playoff game.
The win is in large part to Vincent Albertina and Lincoln Owen having a field day on the ground for the Marauders. Albertina had six yards shy of the 200-yard mark rushing on 28 carries while his colleague Owen ran for 188 yards on 18 carries.
But it was a true team effort on both sides of the ball.
In talking with S-E head coach Ed Holmquist Thursday afternoon, he stated that the keys to the game were going to be no turnovers while being disciplined on defense.
“They are much different than any of the opponents we have faced so far,” said Holmquist Thursday of his opponent, the Jordan-Elbridge Eagles. “They have a lot of formations and unique defensive schemes.”
“They have a great QB and talented receivers. We will have to play very disciplined on defense and fly to the ball. It’s going to be a battle.”
Allowing the Eagles just three touchdowns, totalling 19 points for the 48 minutes of play, it is safe to say Holmquist’s keys were spot on as S-E won the battle.
On the offensive side, the Marauders dominated the line of scrimmage, allowing Owen and Albertina to take advantage of the holes that were open to run all over the ground. “I can’t say enough about what we did up front,” said Holmquist. “The offensive line took over. Mike Marango, our line coach, has done a tremendous job getting our line ready week in and week out.”
Albertina struck first for Sherburne-Earlville in the first quarter with five-yard run into the end-zone. Allan Donnelly’s point after attempt was good, making the 7-0.
The Eagles answered back with a 41-yard pass from quarterback Dominic Walborn, connecting with his receiver Jerimiah Sparks. Tyler Fietta’s kick after the score went through the uprights, tying the score at 7-7.
Albertina added four yard touchdown run to break the tie later in the first quarter. He also added the two-pont conversion attempt, putting the Marauders ahead 15-7 after one quarter.
Shutting down the S-E offense during the second stanza and getting a two-yard score from Hunter Brunelle helped Jordan-Elbridge cut into the Marauder lead, making the score 15-13 at the half.
The Marauders showed they wanted the win more in the in the third, as they trounced J-E, putting up two more scores on the board and taking a 31-13 lead.
Scoring eight points next, Albertina scored his third and final rushing touchdown of the day on a 15 yard run while quarterback Gabe Irwin added on the conversion run for the Marauders.
Owen broke a 61-yard run, scoring his lone touchdown of the game later in the quarter.
Sparks found his running back, Brunelle for a 28-yard touchdown reception for the only score by either team in the fourth, but it was too late for a comeback as the Marauders were just too far out of reach.
The Marauders improve to 6-2 with the win and advanced to next week’s semifinals, where they will have their hands full with top-seed in Class C, the 8-0 General Brown Lions. The two teams will match up at Cicero-North Syracuse High School at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 28.
