Afton defeats Lady Trojans in Class C field hockey semis

AFTON – In game where the two teams were evenly matched, top seed Afton took down Greene in 1-0 contest and will move on to the championship game of the Section IV Class C Field Hockey Tournament.
Afton took both games earlier this season winning 3-2 and 5-2. Knowing it was going to be a closely contested match, it was a tale of two different halves for both the Crimson Knights and the Trojans.
Greene took the advantage in the beginning of the match as they applied pressure to the Crimson Knight defense early and often. A few good shots were taken by the Lady Trojans, but Afton keeper, Jordan Nichols, saved them, keeping the clean slate.
At half time, the game was a stalemate and still up for grabs by either team.
The midfield action quickly turned to the side of the Lady Crimson Knights when they took a penalty corner. Makaela Mills fired a pass from the baseline that found Jannelle Volk waiting up top the circle.
Volk took one touch on the ball then drove home a low lining shot past Greene’s goalie Brooke Austin, giving Afton the 1-0 advantage with 22:01 left in the contest.
Afton kept the pressure on for most of the game, taking a few more shots on goal but Austin stopped them from ending up in the back of the net.
Greene was able to get a couple of shots off of corners but Nichols allowed nothing to pass, recording the shut-out.
Afton looks to revenge their loss in the final from a season ago against second seed and defending NYS Champions, Whitney Point. The two teams faced earlier this year with the Crimson Knight taking the win over the Eagles, 3-2.
“The final game will be have the feel of a state championship game,” said Afton’s assistant coach, Casey Conover. “One of these two teams will be in the state final.”
Greene’s season ends with a final record of 11-5.
The Class C Championship is Saturday, October 28 at 7 p.m. on the turf of Maine-Endwell.
