Lady Crusaders take down the first ranked Finger Lakes Tigers
SENECA FALLS – Valley Heights Christian Academy’s girls soccer team traveled the Seneca Falls Monday night to face the Finger Lakes Lady Tigers and brought home a 3-1 win over the undefeated host team.
Knowing before hand this playoff game was going to be a challenge, the Crusaders fought hard in the first half, holding Finger Lakes to no goals.
However, Finger Lakes was able to do the same to the VHCA.
The Crusaders’ Emily Davis turned the tables with less than a minute left in the half when she ran for a 50/50 ball and found away through the Lady Tiger’s defense, scoring the first goal of the game for either team.
VHCA’s 1-0 lead carried into intermission and into the second half.
In the second half, Briannah ended up with the ball near the 18-yard box. She then fired a shot into the far corner of the net, increasing the Crusaders’ lead to 2-0.
“Briannah really stepped up her game,” said Lady Crusaders’ head coach Eliza Gieger. “She was very aggressive and had one of her best games. Her shot couldn’t have been a more beautiful shot.”
Valley Heights started to get confident in a potential win, the momentum started to swing in favor of the Tigers due to a foul in the box called on the Lady Crusaders.
With their penalty kick finding the back of the net, Finger Lakes cut into the Lady Crusader two goal lead.
Not much longer after the goal, VHCA’s Meghan Van Althuis came from her normal defensive position to take a corner kick, creating a beautiful cross that Grace Bookamer was in the right spot at the right time to receive. Bookamer sent the ball passed the Finger Lakes keeper, surprising herself and her teammates as she grew the lead back to two.
“When Senior defensive Grace DuVall went down hard with a hurt ankle,” commented Gieger, “I had to rearrange some players. The team adjusted well and finished hard.”
The Crusaders ended the Tiger’s undefeated record with a final score of 3-1.
“I was very proud of the girls and their hard work.”
The Lady Crusaders continue their road to a championship as they head to the game that will crown a champion when the final horn sounds. Game will be in McGraw, Saturday, October 28 at 11:00am.
