Performing well on the playing surface and doing well inside the classroom represents the meaning of being The Evening Sun Athlete of the week. Hence why this week’s boys selection is Jon Castle of Bainbridge-Guilford.
After rehabbing from an injury that occurred last year, Jon transitioned from running back to offensive guard for the 2017 season. In a recent conversation he had with his coach (Israel Lorimer), Jon asked if the team was better with him there. Lorimer gave him the honest answer and said yes, absolutely. Castle said then “I’m all for it.”
He and his Bobcat teammates will seek a record of 6-3 after Friday’s game against Thomas A. Edison, which will be Jon’s final game in a B-G football uniform.
Excelling at both of his positions on the field this season, Castle has shown his strength at being a linebacker for the Bobcats, leading the team in tackles (60) and recovering fumbles.
“He’s a true leader,” said Head Coach Israel Lorimer. “He’s been a captain now for two seasons for me. He is the last kid out of the locker room or off the bus, making sure that everything is cleaned up before leaving. He’s just a wonderful kid all around.”
Draining every ounce of energy he has, Jon has an incredible work ethic. “His natural athletic ability really comes from his work ethic,” said Lorimer of Castle’s talent.
Jon also plays for Bainbridge-Guildford’s basketball and baseball teams, making him a three sport student-athlete.
But his talent doesn’t stop at sports.
Jon performs well in the class room.
“He is an outstanding student. He’s a smart kid,” said Lorimer. He is looking at the engineering program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, located in Troy, NY.
Knowing a few people in the area who have gone there, it’s not an easy program to walk into. Hearing what Coach Lorimer has to say about Jon, he should have no problems getting in.
