Afton’s Caiati signs letter of intent to play at Lackawanna College

AFTON – Tuesday evening in front of a room of friends, family, coaches and others, Afton Central School’s Vince Caiati signed his letter of intent, officially committing to the Lackawanna College Baseball Program, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) baseball powerhouse.
Caiati, the starting catcher for the Crimson Knights, said he pledged himself to get the level he is at currently by giving up the opportunity to play other sports to focus on baseball. If he hadn’t, Caiati believes he would not have the success he has had in order to obtain the honor.
“I solely devoted myself to baseball for the love of the game itself and now have the ability to play at the next level while pursuing an education at the same time,” said Caiati.
The baseball program at Lackawanna College has produced several NCAA Division-I players after their completion of the two-years of eligibility, as well as a number of athletes being drafted into the Major League Baseball (MLB). In 2017 alone, Lackawanna sent five to successful D-I teams, three to D-II programs and had one drafted to the MLB.
“I choose Lackawanna because I thought it is a great stepping stone to push myself to another level, to become a better player and a better student-athlete,” stated Ciati on his choice.
The program will have 17 players participating in prospect leagues such as the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) – a New York State based league that includes teams like the Utica Blue Sox and the Oneonta Outlaws – the Northwoods League (NWL) located in the Midwest, and the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL), who has three teams in the Syracuse area, as well as one located in Cortland among their league. These leagues take place in the Summer.
“I have to thank my trainer Luis, who started training me my freshman year. I have to also thank my varsity coach, Coach [Trevor] Beams, my Legion coach, Coach [Jason] Miller, and my JV coach, Coach Palmer, as these are all of the people helped me get to the place I’m at now,” said Caiati. “I also have to thank my parents and everyone who came out tonight.”
