Two local community members start The Scarf Project to bring warmth to those in need
NORWICH – Community members looking to donate gently used winter wear can find an opportunity right in Chenango County through The Scarf Project.
Norwich residents Autumn Joseph and Jamie Maerz came up with The Scarf Project after they talked about having an excess number of scarves in their closets.
Maerz said, "We had a bunch of scarves left over that we hadn't worn in a while that we would like to give to a good cause and it just spiraled from there. We decided that we were going to find out those in the area who had the same problem, and give the items to people that need them."
This is the first year of the project, but Maerz says they are hoping to make it an annual event. Local businesses have asked for collection bins, including NBT-MANG, The Artists' Palette, Frontier, some of the NBT Banks as well as a teacher from Afton.
They are collecting gently used scarves, hats and/or mittens and hanging them around the City of Norwich for those in need to take home.
"We're going to be doing this all Winter so I hope people can dig into their closets and find their gently used items to donate to those in need."
"We went and hung a bunch of items this past Friday and they were gone within 24 hours. We tagged at least 100 different articles and hung them around East and West park and they were gone well before The Parade of Lights on Saturday," Maerz said.
"It's just myself and Autumn, and we have kids so we bring them along to help hang the items throughout town."
If you would like a collection bin at your location or have any questions contact Autumn Joseph by phone at (607) 334-4439 or email at autumn.jospeh@nbtmang.com. Jamie Maerz can be reached by phone at (607) 334-4324 or email jamie.maerz@nbtmang.com.
