Norwich High School Junior raises money for CSPCA and cancer
NORWICH – Norwich native and High School Junior Brenna Baker is no stranger to volunteering, donating time and money to the Chenango SPCA, organizing a bike ride for cancer, and participating in many school programs.
Baker, has been making dog treats and donating all the proceeds to the CSPCA since 2012 through her business, Baker’s Doggone Delicious Treats. What started as a small operation has grown into something much bigger, Baker’s business is a staple at Saturdays in the Park, The Blues Fest, and many seasonal events and fundraisers.
“I’ve always loved dogs, they’re my favorite animal, so I wanted to give money to [The CSPCA] because I knew they needed help with medical purposes,” Baker said. She was able to adopt her first dog from the CSPCA in 2013 and a second one in 2014. “Since then I’ve done more than I ever have because they really mean a lot to me.”
The treats are made from all natural ingredients like peanut butter, flour, milk and as Baker says, her love.
Baker runs Baker’s Doggone Delicious Treats by herself, doing everything from buying the ingredients and baking the treats to selling them and donating the money.
In 2017 she has donated over $1300 and total she has donated $2144 to the CSPCA. Baker says she is on track to donate $3000 total by the end of this year. She will be at the Ladies Day Out Holiday Shopping Event at Howard Johnson’s on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. selling her dog treats.
Baker has waited to donate the proceeds from the past couple months until December, because the CSPCA is holding an event that doubles all donations this month. Her $200 donation will automatically be doubled to $400 because she is donating in December.
In addition to baking and selling dog treats, Baker also organizes a bike ride for cancer every year with her twin sister Hannah. The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) Kids Bike Ride is an annual event organized by the sisters that includes music, games, snacks and refreshments and of course, bike riding. The bike ride is open to kids ages 3 – 15.
They participated for a number of years as riders in the PMC Bike Ride in Rhode Island, but became too old to ride in the event, and ultimately decided to bring the event to their hometown so other kids could participate in the ride while helping raise money for cancer research.
Since starting the event in Norwich in 2015, the sisters have raised over $25,000, with hopes to increase that immensely with this years event, taking place on Sunday June 3, 2018. The money is donated to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.
They will hold fundraisers for the event all year with a Spaghetti Dinner at Taylor’s Country House featuring a silent auction and bake sale on March 11, 2018 and a Chicken BBQ on April 15, 2018. Kids who register for the bike ride will also raise their own money to be added in to the total at the end of the event.
Baker also logs a huge amount of volunteer hours by participating in Dollars For Scholars, YES LEADs; a youth leadership group that teaches kids about the dangers of drug an alcohol abuse, The Chenango Youth Philanthropy Council, Toys For Tots, The Perry Browne Site-Based Committee, The Purple Tornado Community Team, among others.
“I do it because I love it,” Baker said. “It takes up a lot of my time but it’s okay. It’s wasn’t really about volunteering at first, more about raising money for organizations that needed it. It’s fun to see everyone come out for a good cause.”
