Norwich steals a 20 point win in season opener

CHENANGO VALLEY – Norwich’s quick handed, pressuring defense created 27 steals in their 40-20 win to open their 2017-2018 season on the road against the Chenango Valley Warriors. Taylor Hansen grabbed seven from the hands of the Warriors with Abby Flynn taking the ball six times.
Taking some time offensively to get the first game jitters out of their system, the Lady Tornado turned it up a knotch in the fourth quarter, out scoring the Warriors 16-7.
The late-game surge was led by Norwich’s Saige Benedict as she scored 6 of her game high 10 points in the final stanza. Teammate Nicole Jeffrey drove to the basket, creating contact by Chenango Valley and knocked down two of her four foul shots. She added seven to the Purple’s scoring column along with Flynn.
The Lady Warriors had four players all tied at five points apiece to total their 20 overall total.
Norwich will be tested very early in the season as they travel to Susquehanna Valley on Friday, December 15. The Sabers are last year’s Section IV Class B runner up, losing a close game to defending state champion Seton Catholic. Game is scheduled to start at 7:15 p.m.

GREENE – Delhi’s Logan Bruce scored a game-high 20 points Tuesday night while teammate Brenna Gioffe chimmed in with 13 of her own as the two led the Lady Bulldogs to victory over the Greene Trojans.
Greene looked to bounce back following their first loss to Johnson City on Saturday. But due to bad turnovers in the first quarter and Delhi shooting 50 percent from the charity stripe, the Lady Trojans dug themselves into a hole and couldn’t find a way out.
Greene started to crawl back in the third, outscoring the Bulldogs 16-6, the Trojans had a tough time in the fourth as they only scored three to end the game. In that last stanza, Delhi score eight points but all game from the free-throw line.
Emma Smith put the ball through the net six times, leading the team in the scoring column with 12 points on the night. Sophia Brown and McKenna Sergi added six each in the loss for the Trojans.
Greene’s next game isn’t until Tuesday, December 19 when they face Oxford on the road. Game time is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

HOLLAND PATENT – The Lady Marauders’ Tessa Cole led the way for Sherburne-Earlville with 14 points Monday night but Holland Patent grabbed the 56-37 win at home.
Haedyn Roberts double-double of 18 points and 17 rebounds paved the way for the Golden Knights. Her teammate Mckenna Williams kicked in another 14 points for Holland Patent and Makenna Reinold dished seven assists during the contest.
Kaitlyn Furner added six for the Marauders and Jaci Wright chipped in eight depsite the loss.
Cole grabbed a team-high six boards and had two assists on the night.
Sherburne-Earlville will look for their first win of the season when they host Canastota on Thursday, December 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Windsor 88, Greene 50
WINDSOR – Alex Sandway, Dustin Markham and Dominic Williams each recorded individual wins in the Trojans meet against the host Winsdor Tuesday night.
Sandway recorded a time of 2:33.44 in the 200-yard IM while Markham finished in 26.23 for first the 50-yard Freestyle event.
Later in the meet, Williams grabbed first-place with a finishing time of 1:37.40 for the 100-yard Breaststroke.
Greene finished the meet with a win in the 400-yard Freestyle relay with the team of Trent DeHaan, Luke DeJager, Markham and Sandway.
Windsor’s Dante Kimbrough continued his high scores on the board, winning the 1-meter Diving event with a score of 339.40.
Greene’s next meet is scheduled for Tuesday, December 19 at 6 p.m. The Trojans will host Windsor as they face the Black Knights back-to-back meets.

Walton-Delhi 57, Oxford 12
OXFORD – Blackhawks Paul Baker and Jarret Wood each pinned their opponent in the first two weight classes events of the night, giving Oxford their 12 points for the night as Walton-Delhi handed them a loss on Tuesday night.
Baker pinned Asa Giles of Walton-Delhi in the 138-pound weight class in 5:58, just before the event’s time would have expired. Wood took Ty Lambrecht down in just :55 into the 145-pound event.
The 106-pound match between Cody Merwin of Walton-Delhi and Oxford’s Cooper Rice went down to the wire with Merwin coming out with the win by 9-8 decision.
Blackhawk Jade SanSoucie lasted for 3:20 before being pinned by Ty Robinson in the 132-pound weight class while Nico Hubbert put up a fight until 1:32 in the first period when Nick Lamoreaux pinned him.
All other weight classes, Walton-Delhi won by forfeit’s or there was no match.
Oxford heads to Delhi on Saturday for a duel meet where the wrestling will start at 8 a.m.
