Trojans quick defense creates 30 point win over Black Knights; Wednesday local sports coverage

GREENE – The Trojans kicked off the contest with eight steals en route to their 67-37 win over the Windsor Black Knights Wednesday night.
Brandon Whitaker had a total of six steals for a team-high as Greene finished with team total of 12. The Trojans limited Windsor to just 10 field goals in the game due to their strong, quick defense.
“We played good defense tonight,” said Greene head coach Chris Rice. “We are quick and fast, which helps a lot.”
Despite missing many layups in the first four minutes of the game, the Trojans put 15 points on the board to outscore Windsor by 10.
Greene settled down and started to finish more in the following quarters as they went on to score 18, 22 and 12.
“We need to finish and we should be okay. If we can finish our season like we have started it, it should be a good one,” commented Rice.
Leading the way for the Trojans was Nate Erickson with 14 points and Nate Barry finished with 13. Barry also recorded a team-high four rebounds for the contest. Mitchell Walter also scored in double digits, adding 10 for Greene.
Windsor’s Buchek scored 12 as he went eight-for-ten from the free-throw line while Beattie chipped in 10.

Wrestling
Holland Patent 48, Sherburne-Earlville 33
SHERBURNE – Four of the first five matches of the night were handed to Holland Patent due to forfeits by Sherburne-Earlville, helping the Golden Knights secure the 48-33 win on the road against the Marauders Wednesday night.
With every forfeit in the match awarding six points, Holland Patent took a 24-6 lead after five.
Having the commanding lead, the Golden Knights secured six wins in the next seven weight classes. Sherburne-Earlville’s Mike Doeberl pinned Shawn Yocum of Holland Patent in 1:25 to avoid having the opponent win all seven.
The Marauders got back into the match, sweeping the last four matches. Bailey Walzer kicked off the victories with a 6-3 decision win over the Golden Knights. Then S-E’s Tanner Campbell, Alex Thompson and Colby Spavin all pinned their opponents, giving the Marauders another 18 points.
But it was too late as Sherburne-Earlville took the 15 point loss.
“The forfeits are killings us,” said Marauders assistant coach Brian Hicks. “Right now, we are 5-5 and it seems like every loss is happening by the amount of points we lose because of them.”
Sherburne-Earlville heades to the Cuneen Doane Holiday Tournament Saturday, December 16. The tournament is hosted by Walton-Delhi and the wrestling will start at 9 a.m.

Girls Bowling
Oxford 4, Afton 0
NORWICH – The Lady Blackhawks bowled a season high 905 in the final game of the match as they swept Afton Wednesday night.
They did it without their first team All-Star and anchor bowler, Erin Howard. This was Howard’s second match in a row sitting out. “Our sixth and seventh bowler really stepped up over the last two matches filling in for Erin,” said Oxford’s head coach Lance Thorne. “Jourdan [Pinney] and Savannah [Beech] stepped up their games in her absence as well.”
Pinney rolled her way to a match-high series of 565 while Beech finished the contest just one pin behind with a 564. Pinney also recorded a game high of 232 in her final game of the evening.
Afton’s Morgan Merrill ended with a 395 series, leading the Lady Crimson Knights. Madison Baciuska followed with a 318 and Emilie Kipp recorded a 304.

Boys Bowling
Oxford 4, Afton 0
NORWICH – On the boys side of the match between Afton and Oxford, Blackhawk Dakota Simpson continued to impress. Simpson, a Section IV Champion two years ago, is making a comeback from having a tough year last season.
“He’s a much more focused bowler this year and doesn’t let one mistake turn into three or four. He’s well on his way to a top 10 finish in the MAC,” commented Thorne. Simpson’s 556 was the series high for the match, getting help from his 200 in his second game.
Crimson Knight Justin Sayman ended as the team leader with a series of 401.
Oxford’s next match is Friday, December 20 when they travel to face Sidney. Afton will head to Greene the same day. Both matches are scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m.
