Christmas in full-swing in the Village of New Berlin

NEW BERLIN – Only halfway through the month of December, the Village of New Berlin is already filled to the brim with holiday cheer.
This Saturday morning, December 16, New Berlin community members, businesses, and churches will hold the annual Spirit of Christmas event out of the New Berlin Firehouse.
Village of New Berlin Clerk Treasurer Kelly Anderson said, "While the Spirit of Christmas not exactly a village sponsored event, [Village of New Berlin Mayor] Terry Potter is heavily involved, a lot of community members, businesses, and churches are involved, and basically it's people coming together to help out people who don't have quite so much at this time of the year."
Anderson said the event is for families in the surrounding New Berlin region in need. Families are given food baskets at the event, complete with a turkey or ham, canned goods, fresh fruits or vegetables, and are given an opportunity to pick out presents of their kids.
Families who partake are given specific time slots to pick up their goods and their information is kept completely confidential, Anderson said.
People in the New Berlin community also donate hats, mittens, scarves, socks, and other winter necessities to families in need as part of the Spirit of Christmas.
The Spirit of Christmas will be the latest of holiday events in the village this season, in the wake of the annual Christmas in New Berlin event at the Masonic Temple on December 9 and the Christmas Tree Lighting on December 2.
The Christmas in New Berlin event featured craft activities for children, pictures with Santa Claus, and cookie decorating.
At the Christmas Tree Lighting, villagers also were able to meet Santa Claus at an evening complete with firetrucks decorated with Christmas lights and ornaments as Santa's sleigh. Attendees were treated to hot chocolate and cookies, and carolers brought the happy tidings.
