Police name deceased 18-year-old after Bainbridge collision
BAINBRIDGE – New York State Police have released the name of an individual who died from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision in Bainbridge on Wednesday.
Police say Maleek D. Smith, 18, of Staatsburg was pronounced dead after being airlifted to UHS Wilson Hospital in Johnson City following a two-vehicle collision on State Route 206 in Bainbridge last week.
A NYSP investigation revealed that a 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse operated by Smith was traveling eastbound on State Route 206 when the vehicle crossed into the westbound lane directly into the path of a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche operated by Joseph Artuso, 53, of Syracuse.
Following the collision, Smith was transported via ambulance to Tri-Town Regional Hospital in Sidney before being airlifted to UHS Wilson Hospital where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.
Police say Artuso and his two passengers were transported to Tri-Town Regional Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
A spokesperson at SUNY Cortland said that Maleek D. Smith was a student at the college.
“The SUNY Cortland community is deeply saddened by the loss of Maleek Smith, who died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Wednesday night,” said SUNY Cortland spokesperson Fred Pierce said in a statement to college students, faculty, and staff.
“Maleek was a freshman on the ultimate Frisbee team and a resident of Hendrick Hall. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”
Pierce said SUNY Cortland will hold a memorial service for Smith at the beginning of the 2018 spring semester.
