NYS trooper hurt after being struck while assisting motorist

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — State police say a trooper was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle while assisting a disabled motorist on an overpass leading to the Long Island Expressway near Brentwood.

State police say 35-year-old Trooper Joseph Gallagher had stopped to help a motorist who had broken down when he was struck by another vehicle. It happened about 2:30 p.m. Monday.

The three-year veteran assigned to Troop L in Bentwood was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he underwent surgery for head injuries. He is listed in serious condition.

The motorist who struck the trooper remained at the scene.
