Selfridge hits 1,000 milestone as Lady Bobcats keep Kazalski bragging rights at home
BAINBRIDGE – A night earlier, Bainbridge-Guilford's Megan Palmatier reached a landmark in her amazing basketball high school basketball career. Thursday night, she recorded the assist on the monumental point for her long-time teammate, Abi Selfridge.
Abi Selfridge started Thursday's championship contest against the Deposit/Hancock Eagles six points shy of reaching her 1,000 point career. Following Kori Thornton's opening bucket for the Lady Bobcats, Selfridge dropped in two baskets, leaving her just one away from the milestone.
While the ping-pongesque game between the two teams was going on, the local fans were all on edge, waiting for Selfridge to get the one score that stood in the way.
The first quarter ended at 14-11, in favor of B-G and the fans still halted for a moment.
It was at the 6:49 mark in the second quarter when the stand erupted in a roaring cheer as the ball dropped from the net, coming from Selfridge's hands for a basket she won't forget.
“I think it's incrediable. I don't know if an acomplishment like this has happened for any teams in the area,” said Bobcats head coach Bob Conway of two teammates reaching 1,000 points on back-to-back nights. “It very well could have been the same night but Abi was in foul trouble early in the game yesterday and had to sit for a good portion of the first half.”
It was shortly after her basket, the Bobcats started playing the basketball everyone has been waiting to see from them all season. They opened up a large lead on the Eagles, who put on a full-court press, hoping to make Bainbridge-Guilford panic and cause turnovers. But it didn't work in their favor as B-G led by as many as 17 points in the quarter.
Erica Selfridge tipped in a rebounded shot as the halftime buzzer sounded to give the Bobcats at 34-18 lead at the half.
But Deposit/Hancock came out the second half with some fire, scoring 24 in the quarter to close the large B-G lead down to seven by the end of the eight minutes. The comeback was led by Laycee Drake's 11 points.
It may have taken a few minutes in the third but the Bobcats managed to keep the lead by answering every basket scored by the Eagles.
“Both teams came out with a right hook. I can make it, you can make it. It was a battle,” described Conway of the third quarter of play. “Our nice first half run was very important for us.”
In the final quarter of play, it was all Bainbridge-Guilford as they held Deposit/Hancock to just six points as a team.
Abi Selfridge tacked on another 13 points for the quarter, giving her a final total of 31 points on the night while pulling in 10 rebounds to record a double-double on her historic night.
Drake finished with a team-high 22 for the Eagles.
Palmatier scored 17 in the contest and added a team-high four steals while dealing three assists. Erica Selfridge dished out a team high five assists and Jill Cannistra chipped in four.
“We haven't been playing up to our potential to start the season,” said Palmatier. “But tonight, we played great and played as a team. We are excited with the way we played.”
When asked about their career milstones, both Palmatier and Abi Selfridge said, “We couldn't have done this without the people who put us in the position to reach this accomplishment. Our teammates and Coach Conway have been there all along and it wouldn't have been possible without any of them. We have a had good teams and good players to play with and that helps.”
Bainbridge-Guilford has a few days off before they travel to Afton for a boys-girls quad-header on January 4.
